Venkatasamy Jagannathan: The Visionary Behind Star Health and Allied Insurance

Early Career and Background

Venkatasamy Jagannathan, a distinguished figure in the Indian insurance industry, has had a remarkable career spanning several decades. Born with a deep passion for the insurance sector, Jagannathan began his professional journey in 1970 at Hercules Insurance Company. His career trajectory saw a significant rise when he joined United India Insurance, where he served as the Chairman and Managing Director until his superannuation.

Founding Star Health and Allied Insurance

After retiring from United India Insurance, Jagannathan was not ready to rest on his laurels. In 2006, leveraging his extensive experience and industry knowledge, he founded Star Health and Allied Insurance Company. With the backing of the Dubai-based ETA Group, he embarked on this entrepreneurial venture, establishing India’s first standalone health insurance company.

Star Health started with humble beginnings, operating out of a small rented office with a team of just 12 employees. Despite the modest start, the company rapidly grew under Jagannathan’s visionary leadership. His strategic focus on providing quality healthcare and affordable insurance options helped the company carve a niche in the competitive insurance market.

Growth and Achievements

Under Jagannathan’s stewardship, Star Health and Allied Insurance achieved significant milestones. The company reported a net profit of ₹619 crore for the fiscal year 2022-23, a remarkable turnaround from a loss of ₹1,041 crore in the previous year. This impressive performance was attributed to increased gross written premiums and efficient management practices. The company’s market capitalization soared to ₹30,000 crore, highlighting its substantial growth and industry impact

Jagannathan’s leadership was instrumental in steering the company through various challenges, including the complex regulatory environment and the competitive pressures of the insurance market. His efforts ensured that Star Health remained at the forefront of innovation and customer-centric service delivery.

Resignation and Future Endeavors

In June 2023, Jagannathan resigned from his role as the Non-Executive Chairman of Star Health and Allied Insurance. This marked the end of an era for the company, which had greatly benefited from his leadership and vision. However, Jagannathan’s entrepreneurial spirit remains undiminished. At the age of 74, he announced plans to embark on a new project, demonstrating his continued commitment to innovation and leadership in the insurance sector

Legacy and Impact

Venkatasamy Jagannathan’s legacy in the insurance industry is marked by his pioneering efforts and unwavering dedication to enhancing the accessibility and affordability of health insurance in India. His contributions have not only transformed Star Health into a leading player in the market but have also set new benchmarks for excellence in the industry.
