Srinath Ravichandran, co-founder and CEO of AgniKul Cosmos, is a key figure in India’s burgeoning private space sector. His journey from an aspiring engineer to a leading entrepreneur in space technology is a testament to his determination and vision.
Ravichandran’s fascination with space began in his childhood, inspired by the PSLV and GSLV launches he watched with his physics teacher parents. Despite his early interest in aerospace, he initially pursued a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the College of Engineering, Guindy, Chennai. He later earned a master’s degree in financial engineering from Columbia University, which led to a career in finance. However, his passion for space technology remained, prompting him to pursue further studies in aerospace engineering at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and obtain a certificate in astronautical engineering from UCLA
Career and Founding of AgniKul Cosmos
Before founding AgniKul, Ravichandran accumulated diverse professional experiences, including roles in asset allocation, portfolio management, and market risk management at various financial institutions. His return to his true calling came during his time in Los Angeles, where he noticed the challenges small-sized satellites faced in accessing space due to the oversized rockets available. This observation led to the founding of AgniKul Cosmos in 2017, alongside co-founder Moin SPM
Innovations and Achievements
AgniKul Cosmos aims to democratize space access by making satellite launches more affordable and flexible. The company’s flagship product, the Agnibaan rocket, is a lightweight, customizable launch vehicle capable of carrying payloads up to 100 kg to low Earth orbit (LEO). A key innovation from AgniKul is the Agnilet, a single-piece 3D-printed rocket engine, which simplifies manufacturing and reduces costs. The company achieved a significant milestone by opening India’s first private rocket engine factory in Chennai and launching a private space vehicle launch pad in Sriharikota
Overcoming Challenges
Ravichandran’s journey with AgniKul was not without hurdles. The company had to endure over 400 pitch meetings before securing its first round of funding in 2018. Despite these challenges, AgniKul has raised substantial capital, including a $26.7 million Series B funding round, bringing its total funding to $40 million as of 2023. These funds are being used to further develop their launch vehicles and expand their capabilities
Vision for the Future
Under Ravichandran’s leadership, AgniKul Cosmos envisions making space travel as routine as any other form of transportation on Earth. By providing customizable, cost-effective launch solutions, AgniKul aims to support a wide range of applications, from manufacturing in microgravity environments to deploying small satellite constellations for Earth observation and communication. Ravichandran believes that space should not just be a destination but a platform for various commercial activities.
Srinath Ravichandran’s story is one of passion, perseverance, and innovation. His work at AgniKul Cosmos is paving the way for a new era in Indian space technology, making space more accessible and expanding the possibilities for commercial space endeavors.
